U12 report from the Bathurst Cup

Bathurst Cup – Proctor Park
Under 12 BUFC
Game 1 v Bankstown District FA

Belconnen got off to a great start putting Bankstown under pressure from the opening whistle. However, it was Bankstown that went ahead against the run of play with a breakaway goal.

Down 1-0 at half time Belconnen continued to dominate possession deep into the second half chasing an elusive draw. Finally it came with 1 minute to go when an attack down the right side resulted in a cross and a deflected own goal. It was a strong performance from the whole team with a result that could have been more conclusive. The boys fought hard to the final whistle which was extremely pleasing.

Well done!!

Game 2 v Riverina Rhinos

The second game for Belconnen started much like the first. Some early positive touches and possession followed by a goal to the opposition. Riverina were clearly here to play football and it wasn’t long before the game turned into a very tight affair. Half time and Belconnen was down 2-0.

The heat started to take its toll in the second half and Riverina were winning the 50/50 tackles and showing greater strength on the ball. Belconnen found themselves down 3-0 while still fighting hard until the end. The boys are looking for a good performance tomorrow to show what we know they are capable of.

Game 3 v WNSW Mariners FC

The final round game against the undefeated WNSW Mariners started well and was a very even contest. Only a few half chances and even possession was a fair description of the first half. Belconnen played some beautiful one and two touch football as they moved the ball from defence through the midfield. The Mariners always seemed to have an extra defender on hand as the ball moved towards the forward line. Some strong runs down the wing had Belconnen getting in behind the defence. The scores were locked 0-0 at half time in a very tight battle.

The second half started to open up with periods of play where one team seemed to dominate then the other without troubling the scorers. The Mariners made the breakthrough with about 5 mins remaining after a strong attacking solo run and shot into the top right corner. The second goal came shortly after resulting in a final score line of 2-0 to the Mariners.

Belconnen put in a strong performance to push the highly fancied Mariners to the final whistle. We (the parents), were very proud of the way they played and the spirit of fair play displayed. A big thank you to Tom and Joe for leading the team along with others who helped out over the weekend. Looking forward to a great season ahead.
