ACT Women’s Premier League juggernaut Belconnen United will go international this weekend as they face the Fiji national team in a friendly match in Bowral. The Canberra Premier League pacesetters will provide the opposition for the Fijians as part of their preparation for the Pacific Games held in Paua New Guinea from 4th-19thJuly.
The Pacific Games will see around 3,000 athletes from 21 Pacific nations competing in the competition and the Fijian football team have high hopes for a medal. Whilst in Australia the Fijians will also play the Sydney Koalas and MacArthur Rams, both highly placed in the Sydney Women’s National Premier League.
“This is an incredible opportunity for us to take on the Fijians,” Belconnen United Head Coach Antoni Jagarinec commented. “It’s not every day of the week that you get to play against a fully-fledged international team and this is a superb chance for our local players to pit their skills against international players. I am expecting to utilise most of my squad for what will be a fascinating challenge.”
The Blue Devils currently sit atop the ACT Women’s Premier League, undefeated this season, having swept the board of trophies last season. Belconnen United will play Fiji at David Woods Oval this Saturday 6th June with kick-off at 2pm. David Woods Oval can be found at Boardman Road, Bowral.
